Print, PDF, and EPUB
Take a story with you as a PDF, to print or keep, or as an EPUB for an e-reader. Both are in the toolbar’s Export menu.
Save a story as a PDF
- In the reader’s toolbar, choose Export (the download arrow).
- Choose Export as PDF. While the PDF is made, the Export button shows a spinner and Preparing PDF… (just the spinner on a phone).
- The PDF downloads. Open it to read or print it.
The PDF looks like the page: in Guided it has the translation under each line, and with Pronunciation on it has the pronunciation under each word. Set the Layout and Pronunciation the way you want before you export.
Example
Sarah wants to practice a Croatian A1 story on paper. She switches to Solo so the translations are hidden, ticks Worksheet, and exports a PDF with lines for her name and the date.
Add a worksheet or a key word list
- Choose Export, then the small arrow next to Export as PDF (PDF options).
- Tick Worksheet to add lines for a name and the date.
- Key words lists the story’s key words after it. It’s on to start; untick it to leave them out.
- Choose Export as PDF.
While Worksheet is on and the options are folded away, a small Worksheet label shows next to Export as PDF. Your choices stay for your next exports.
Save a story as an EPUB
- Choose Export, then Export as EPUB.
- The EPUB file downloads. Open it in your e-reader app, or copy it to your e-reader. On a phone or tablet, see On a phone or tablet.
Like the PDF, the EPUB has the line translations only in Guided, and the pronunciation when Pronunciation is on.
Download the audio as an MP3
Export as audio (MP3) in the same menu works for any story you can play aloud, such as with Premium Audio or on a tutor’s link with audio. See Audio.
On a phone or tablet
On a phone or tablet, an export opens your device’s own share sheet instead of a plain download. There you can open the file in Books or Preview, save it to Files, or send it to another app. This goes for the PDF, the EPUB, the MP3 and the Word Bank’s CSV.
A PDF or an MP3 takes a few seconds to prepare, and your phone only allows the share sheet right after a tap. So when one is ready, a box says Your file is ready. Choose Open or share to continue. If your browser can’t share files, the file downloads as it does on a computer.
On a phone, Copy link on a tutor’s link also opens the share sheet, so you can send it straight to Messages or WhatsApp.
Why can’t I export a PDF on Free?
Print, PDF, and EPUB come with Learner Plus and Educator Studio. On Free, or when you’re not signed in, the Export button and its Export as PDF and Export as EPUB items have a lock: pointing to the button says Upgrade to export, and choosing a PDF or EPUB opens the upgrade box. See Plans and limits.
Tip
To put several stories in one PDF, export them from your Library instead. See Saving and finding stories.
The print dialog opened instead of a PDF download.
Sometimes Stichos can’t make the PDF, for example after many PDFs in a short time. A message says so, and your browser’s print dialog opens instead. There, choose your printer, or “Save as PDF”. On a tutor’s link, Export as PDF always opens the print dialog, as a worksheet.
It says to verify my email to export PDFs.
PDFs need a confirmed email address. A Verify your email box opens: type the 6-digit code from the email Stichos sent you, or open the link in it, then try again.
