Add students and classes
A student is a name you give to someone you send stories to, or to a whole class. It isn’t an account: your students never sign up or see it. You add them on your Dashboard or while you share a story, and each one has a page showing their reading.
Adding and changing students needs the Educator Studio plan.
Add a student or class on your Dashboard
- On your Dashboard, choose Add student.
- Type the Name or class, such as “Noah” or “Tuesday group”.
- Pick the Language they read. A student belongs to one story language.
- For a group, tick This is a class.
- Choose Add. They appear under All students.
A name can be used only once, in any mix of capital letters. If it’s taken, Stichos says “You already have a student or class called “…”.” If you archived someone with that name, Stichos says “You have an archived student or class called “…”.” Choose Restore … to bring them back instead.
You can also add a student while you share a story, under Add a link for… in Educator Studio. See Links for a student or class.
Example
Elena teaches Russian. She adds Noah and Priya with Language set to Russian, then Tuesday group with This is a class ticked. All three now show under Add a link for… when she shares a Russian story.
Follow one student
Choose a name under All students to open their page. It shows:
- Their stories, by unit. Each unit they’ve been sent a story from is listed with all its lessons in order, so you can see what’s next. Units before their current one start folded; choose a unit’s name to open it. Stories outside a unit are under Not in a unit.
- For each story: the lesson number, the Story, the day it was Opened, a check mark when Finished, the Time in minutes, and Lookups per 100 words. A lesson you haven’t sent says “not sent”; one they haven’t opened says “not opened yet”, and one they opened but chose not to share says “chose not to share”. At the end of each sent story’s row is a copy icon (Copy link): it copies that story’s link, handy when you sent a batch and forgot to copy the links. It isn’t shown for a link that’s turned off. The arrow at the top left goes back to your Dashboard.
- How they read it. Under a story read mostly in one layout, a note says “Read mostly with translations” (Guided) or “Read mostly as plain text” (Solo). Their lookup numbers say less about how hard it was.
- Their trend, at the side, such as “Lookups per 100 words went from 13 to 7 over the last 3 stories read in Assisted.” See Dashboard.
- Words they keep looking up: words looked up in at least two of their stories, with how many stories. Until then, it says “No word has come up in two of their stories yet.”
Choose a story’s title to open its link report. See Reading a link report.
Send the next story
- On the student’s page, choose Send next story.
- Educator Studio opens the first published lesson of their current unit that you haven’t sent them. Share it as usual, adding their link under Add a link for….
Their current unit is the unit of the newest story in a unit that you sent them. If you’ve sent every lesson in it, Educator Studio opens the form with that unit picked, ready for a new story. The button shows once you’ve sent them a story that’s in a unit.
Use the words they keep looking up
- On the student’s page, under Words they keep looking up, choose Use as key words.
- Educator Studio opens with the story language set to the student’s and those words as the form’s key words, in place of any already there. If there are more than the level allows, a message says how many were left out.
- Check the rest of the form and choose Generate.
Rename a student or mark them as a class
- On the student’s page, choose Manage student.
- Choose Rename, type the new name, and choose Save. Or choose Mark as a class (for a class, Mark as one student).
Their links and reading stay as they are.
Can I change a student’s language?
No. A student keeps the language you picked. If you teach someone two languages, add them twice under two names, such as “Noah (Russian)” and “Noah (Hebrew)”.
Can I see each class member’s reading?
No. A class has one link that everyone in it shares, so its page shows the class’s reading on that link together.
Why isn’t a student under For when I share a story?
Add a link for… lists only the students and classes for that story’s language, and not archived ones. See Archive or delete a student.
