Word Bank

Your Word Bank keeps the words you save, with their meaning and the sentence you found them in. It shows one language at a time: the one you’re learning now.

Save words to your Word Bank

The first two ways work on all plans, once you’re signed in.

  • While reading: choose a word in the story, then the tag icon in its box (Save to Word Bank). See Looking up a word.
  • From the search box: look the word up, then choose Save. See the next section.
  • From the Story Studio form (Learner Plus and Educator Studio): when you add key words, choose Save to Word Bank next to a meaning. See Every option on the form.

A message says “Saved to Word Bank”.

Look up a new word

The search box at the top of the Word Bank (Search or look up a word) finds your saved words, and looks up new ones.

  1. Type a word. Your saved words that match show as you type.
  2. To look it up, choose Look up “…” in Croatian (the language you’re learning) under the list. When none of your saved words match, pressing Enter looks it up too.
  3. Each meaning comes with a short definition, an example, and often a level, such as about A1. Choose Save next to the one you want.

You can also type a word in your own language. Stichos then shows words for it in the language you’re learning, under a heading such as Croatian words for “coffee”.

Look up any word and save the meaning you need.

Example

Sarah sees “tržnica” on a sign in Split. She types it in her Word Bank, chooses Look up “tržnica” in Croatian, and saves the meaning “market”.

It says “No match.”

Check the spelling, or try the form you’d find in a dictionary (for example, “run” instead of “running”). When Stichos has a guess, it says “No match. Did you mean:” with up to three spellings; choose one to look it up. Look up one word or a short phrase of up to three words.

A word Stichos’s dictionary already has doesn’t count. Limits reset at 00:00 UTC. When you reach yours, the Word Bank says so; on Free it offers Upgrade to Learner Plus. Your saved words still open. Lookups need a confirmed email address. Words in a story have their own limit.

Read your saved words

Each word shows in the form you’d find in a dictionary, with “seen as …” when the story had another form.

  1. Choose a word to open its card: the meaning, notes, and a speaker button. A word saved in another form has two: dictionary form and as in your story.
  2. Choose the ×, or the word again, to close it.

With Premium Audio, words play in a natural-sounding voice; otherwise your device’s voice reads them. Esperanto words are read by a Polish voice, so they have a Polish accent.

Sort your words

Use the sort button next to the search box (Sort words): Part of speech (the first choice), Newest first, Oldest first, Word (A–Z), or Meaning (A–Z).

Part of speech groups your words under Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and so on. One group is open at a time; choose a group’s name to open it. Words Stichos hasn’t sorted yet wait under Not sorted yet.

See your words in the story you’re reading

In the Story Studio, In this story at the top of the Word Bank (it names the story’s language, for example In this story (Croatian), and keeps it if you change the Word Bank’s language) lists the story’s Key words and Words you’ve saved: the saved words that appear in the story. Choose More on a word to see its card.

Words in other languages

Below the list, choose Your words in other languages, then a language (Switch to Greek, for example), then Switch. Your new stories and the reader switch to that language too.

Remove a word

Choose the bin icon on the word’s right (Remove … from Word Bank). The word is removed at once.

How many words can I save?

Free keeps up to 200 words; Learner Plus and Educator Studio have no limit. When you’re full, Stichos offers an upgrade. Leave a paid plan with more words than that, and you keep them all, but can’t save new ones until you delete some or upgrade. See Plans and limits.
