Reading a link report
A link report shows one student’s reading of one story on their link: when they opened it, for how long, whether they finished, and which words they looked up and where. It’s also where you turn that link off or delete it.
Link reports are for tracked links, which need the Educator Studio plan. A plain link has no report. Your own visits to your links aren’t counted while you’re signed in.
Open a link report
- On your Dashboard, choose the student or class.
- On their page, choose the story’s title. Titles you haven’t sent them aren’t links.
Above the title, choose Dashboard or the student’s name to go back.
What the figures at the top mean
- The date: the day they first opened the story, or “Not opened yet”.
- Visits: how many times they opened it, with the minutes in total, such as “4 visits” and “5 min in total”. Time counts only while the story is on their screen, rounded to the nearest minute.
- Finished (“reached the end”) or Not finished (“didn’t reach the end”). Finished means they reached the last line, on any visit.
- Lookups: every time they looked a word up, with how many different words and the Lookups per 100 words, such as “6 lookups” and “4 different words · 10 per 100 words”. Looking up the same word twice counts twice.
- Time in each layout, such as “Guided 0 min · Assisted 5 min · Solo 0 min”. It shows once some layout time has come in.
Before they open it, the report says “Not opened yet”, the counts are 0, and there’s no layout tag. A student who opens the link has to choose Continue or Don’t share on its notice before the story shows. If they choose Don’t share, the date says “Chose not to share” and the counts stay 0: it works, but they’ve kept their reading private. A student who closes the link without choosing also shows as “Not opened yet”, because nothing is reported until they choose. If they choose Share after all later, the report fills in from then on.
Lookups per 100 words lets you compare stories of different lengths. The title’s words count as part of the story. It shows only once the student has opened the story.
Which layout did they read in?
A tag next to the title says which layout had at least half their time:
- “Read mostly in Assisted”: the translation was hidden, so their lookups show what they didn’t know.
- “Read mostly with translations” (Guided): every translation was on screen, so they barely needed to look anything up.
- “Read mostly as plain text” (Solo): words can’t be looked up in Solo.
So a low number from a Guided or Solo reading doesn’t mean the story was easy, and a student’s trend counts only Assisted readings. With no layout holding half the time, there’s no tag.
See where they looked words up
- Each word they looked up is marked, with a small number for how many times.
- A line with 3 or more lookups gets a mark down its side, so you can spot where they struggled.
- If they looked up a word in the title, the title shows first, marked the same way.
Looked up, most first, at the side, lists the words, the most looked-up first. A word they met in different forms is listed once, under its dictionary form, when Stichos knows it.
Use their words for the next story
- Under Looked up, most first, choose Use as key words for the next story.
- Educator Studio opens with the story language set to the student’s and those words as the form’s key words.
- Check the rest of the form and choose Generate.
Example
Noah read “Матильда и погода” for 5 minutes over four visits, all in Assisted, and finished it. He looked up “тепло” and “улице” twice each, on the same line, so that line has a side mark. Elena chooses Use as key words for the next story to practice them again.
Copy the link
Choose Copy link at the top of the report to copy this link again, for example to resend it. It shows only while the link is on. The arrow at the top left goes back to the student’s page.
Turn the link off, on, or delete it
At the top right of the report:
- Turn off: the link stops opening, and the report says Off. Choose Turn on to share it again, at the same address. If the student already has another link for this story that’s on, Stichos says “… already has a live link for this story.”
- Delete link: Stichos asks “Delete this link?”: “The link stops working, and what was read on it is deleted. This can’t be undone. Signed-in students who open a link find the story in their Library, from you by your display name, until you turn the link off or delete it. A student who saves it keeps their own copy.” Choose Delete link to confirm. You go back to the student’s page.
If your plan has ended, you can still turn a link off or delete it, but not turn it back on.
The report says “They read an earlier version of this story.”
You published an edit and moved the link to the new version after they read it. The text shown is the version they read. If that version is gone, the report says “The version they read is no longer available, so only the words they looked up are shown.”
Why do the layout minutes add up to less than the total?
Time in each layout stops after 10 minutes with no scrolling, tapping, typing, or mouse movement, so a story left open on a screen doesn’t count as reading in any layout.
Is a class’s report one student’s reading?
No. A class shares one link, so its report adds up everyone’s reading on it.
