Words (your word lists)
The Words card keeps a word list for each of your units. Add the words a unit teaches once, then put them on the form as key words whenever you make a story for that unit.
Adding and changing words needs the Educator Studio plan. If your plan ends, you can still see and delete your words.
Add a word to a unit
- In Words, type the word in the box at the top. The list narrows to matching words as you type, and Add to … shows where the word will go.
- Check Add to …. It starts as the unit you’re working in. To file the word somewhere else, pick another unit or Not in a unit. The language is the one on the tab you’re looking at.
- To pick a meaning, press Enter or choose Look up. The dictionary’s meanings show in your students’ language. Choose Add this meaning next to the right one (for a word with only one meaning, the button says Add). It then says On the list.
- To add the word with no lookup, choose Add as typed.
- The box empties after each add, so you can type the next word.
A word can be up to 60 characters. Swear words and slurs can’t be looked up or added: a message says the word can’t be used, and the lookup isn’t counted. If it’s already on one of your lists, Stichos says which unit it’s in, with Move it here when that’s another unit.
Each lookup counts toward your daily dictionary searches. See Plans and limits.
Example
Elena is planning “Unit 3: Food and drink”. She types “кофе”, chooses Look up, and adds the meaning “coffee”. Then she adds “чай” and “сок” the same way.
Paste a list of words
To add several words at once, paste them into the same box, separated by commas, semicolons, or line breaks (a list copied from a spreadsheet or a document works; if the sheet has a meaning beside each word, only the first column is kept). Instead of Look up, the box shows Add 3 words (the number of words in your list). Check Add to …, then choose it, or press Enter. The words go in as typed, with no meanings, and a message says how many were added and how many were already on your lists. A word over 60 characters is left out. A list adds up to 50 words at a time; the rest stay in the box, so choose Add … words again. If any word in the list can’t be used, nothing is added: take it out, or add the words one at a time to find it, and choose Add … words again. To give a word a meaning, add it on its own with Look up.
Add words from your Word Bank
If you’ve saved words while reading in the Story Studio, you can copy them to a unit.
- Choose the + next to the box at the top (More ways to add), then Add from my Word Bank. Your saved words in that language show.
- Check Add to …, then tick the words you want and choose Add … words.
A message says how many were added and how many were already on your lists. See Word Bank.
Save a story’s key words to its unit
- In Stories, open the story’s ⋯ menu.
- Choose Save key words to …’s words (with the unit’s name). For a story not in a unit, it’s Save key words to the words not in a unit.
Use words as key words for a new story
- In Words, choose the checkbox button left of the search box (Select words). It turns blue and a checkbox shows on each word.
- Tick the words you want. Tapping anywhere on a word’s row ticks it.
- Choose Use as key words. The words replace the form’s key words, and a message says “… key words in the form.”
If the words are in another language than the form, the form’s story language changes to match. A level allows only so many key words, so extra words are left out, and the message says so.
You can also add one word at a time: choose the + button on its row (or Add to key words in its ⋯ menu), or drag it onto the form’s Key words. They all add to the words already there when the story is in the same language. For a word in another language, the button and the menu switch the form to that language and start the key words over; dragging does nothing. To use a whole unit’s list, pick the unit on the form and choose Use this unit’s … words. See The form, option by option.
Edit, tag, move, or delete a word
Open the word’s ⋯ menu:
- Add to key words: puts the word on the form after the key words already there.
- Edit meaning and note: change the Meaning and add a Note for yourself, then choose Save. Stichos checks a new or changed Meaning when you save it, because it prints in your Key words PDF (a Note is only for you and isn’t checked). If a meaning can’t be used, a message says so and nothing is saved: reword it and choose Save again. Adding several words at once checks the meanings together, so one meaning that can’t be used stops the whole add.
- Tags: label the word, as you would a story.
- Move to unit: pick another unit, Not in a unit, or New unit…. You can also drag the word onto another unit.
- Delete: removes the word from your lists.
To find a word, type in the box at the top (it looks at words, meanings, notes, and tags), or choose a tag on a word. The sort button orders words by Newest first, Oldest first, or A–Z. The same box adds words: if nothing matches what you typed, Look up and Add as typed are right below it.
Are units in Words the same as units in Stories?
Yes. Both cards show the same units in the same order. A unit you make, rename, reorder, or delete in one changes in the other. See Units, tags, and lesson order.
I teach a new language. Where do its words go?
Each language with words has its own tab. If the form’s story language has no words yet, choose Add words in … (the language) at the top of the card, then type its first word in the box.
Do students see my word lists?
No. Your words, meanings, notes, and tags are only for you. Students see the key words in the stories you send them. The one exception is a Key words list in a PDF you make: it shows the meanings you wrote.
