Links for a student or class
A tracked link is a link you make for one student or one class. It reports when they open the story, whether they finish it, how long they read, and which words they look up, all on your Dashboard. Your plain link for anyone reports nothing.
Tracked links need the Educator Studio plan.
How do I share a story with a student or class?
- Open a published story from Stories.
- In the bar under the toolbar, in the Share link row, open Add a link for… and choose the student or class. The list shows the students and classes who read the story’s language.
- Set how the story should open, as for any link. See Share a link.
- Their link appears under Links for students, highlighted for a moment, and a message says “Link for … added below.” Nothing is copied yet.
- In their row, choose the copy icon, then send the link to that student, or to the class.
The first time you make any link, Stichos asks you to confirm once that you’ll send links only to learners 18 or older, tell students when their reading is reported to you, use the reports only to teach them, and enter only names or labels for students and classes (see Share a link). Your students see a notice with a Continue button on a tracked link, and nothing is reported to you until they choose it.
Each student or class has one link per story. If they already have a link that’s on, even on an older version of the story, choosing them again doesn’t make a second one: a message says they already have a link, and their row is highlighted. Otherwise a new link is made that opens the way your preview looks.
Under the status, a line also says where the story is filed and who it’s shared with, for example “Saved in Unit 1: First words · Shared with Priya.” Choose the unit name to open the story in the Stories card.
Example
Elena teaches Russian to Noah, to Priya, and to her Tuesday group. For “Матильда и погода”, she adds a link for Noah under Add a link for…, then for Priya and the Tuesday group, and copies each from its row. Each gets their own link, and her Dashboard shows each one’s reading.
Add a new student or class
- Open Add a link for… and choose New student….
- Type the Student or class name. For a group, tick This is a class.
- Choose Add. The new student or class is added, and their link appears under Links for students.
A student belongs to the story’s language. If the name is taken, Stichos says “You already have a student or class called “…”.” If you archived someone with that name, choose Restore … to bring them back instead. You can also add and manage students on your Dashboard. See Add students and classes.
See and copy the links a story already has
Under the plain link, Links for students lists each student or class with a link for this story. Choose the copy icon in a row to copy that link again.
Copy links for a student from the Stories card
- One story: open its ⋯ menu and choose Copy for a student….
- Several stories: choose the checkbox button left of the search box (Select stories), tick the stories, choose Copy links (…), and pick the student in the box that opens. This works when all the stories are in one language.
In the What students see box, the starting-point boxes apply only to links made now: “For the links made for them now. A link they already have stays as it is. Students can change both.”
What the student sees
A tracked link also says who it was made for, above the story, for example “Made for Kenji.” It shows a student’s first name only (a class’s whole name), so someone who gets the wrong link can tell you. A tracked link shows a notice above the story: “Your tutor will see when you open this story, how long you read, whether you finish it, and which words you look up.” The student can close it, but their reading is still reported. See What your tutor sees, the page your students can read about it.
A class link is one link that the whole class shares. Your Dashboard shows the class’s reading on it together, not each student’s.
Your own visits to your links aren’t counted.
A student who opens their tracked link while signed in also finds the story in their Library, under From your tutor, until you turn the link off or delete it (or delete the student). If they save it, they keep their own copy. You don’t see their Library, and this isn’t counted as an open.
Turn a tracked link off or delete it
Each link in Links for students has its own row, laid out like the plain link: the name, the address with Copy link, an On switch, an Open as a student icon, and a ⋯ menu with Delete link. The plain link’s On switch affects only the plain link, so you can turn it off and leave every student’s link on, or the other way around.
- Turn off: switch On off. The link stays in the list, Copy link waits, and the student sees it stop working. Switch it back on any time.
- Delete: open ⋯ and choose Delete link. Deleting a link also deletes what was read on it.
You can also do this from your Dashboard:
- On your Dashboard, open the student or class, then choose the story’s title to open its link report.
- Choose Turn off (or Turn on), or Delete link.
If your plan ends, your Dashboard lists every link under Your share links, with Turn off and Delete link.
What happens to links when I archive or delete a student?
Archiving a student keeps their links opening, but they stop recording what the student reads. Deleting a student stops their links working and deletes what they read on them. See Archive or delete a student.
Why isn’t a student in the For list?
Add a link for… shows only the students and classes for the story’s language, and not archived ones. To send a Hebrew story, add the student with a Hebrew story open.
