Full screen and dark mode
Full screen hides everything but the toolbar and the story, so nothing distracts you while you read. Dark mode turns the page dark, which is easier on the eyes at night.
Read in full screen
- In the reader’s toolbar, choose Full screen. It’s the last button on the right, with four corner marks.
- The app’s header, the story form, the side cards, and the footer go away. Where your browser allows it, the page also fills the whole screen.
- To come back, choose Exit in the toolbar, or press Escape.
All the toolbar controls still work in full screen: Layout, Pronunciation, looking up words, and audio.
Example
Sarah reads a Croatian A1 story on her laptop in the evening. She turns on dark mode, then chooses Full screen, so the story fills the screen with nothing else around it.
Full screen didn’t fill my whole screen.
Some browsers, such as Safari on iPhone, don’t let a page go full screen. Full screen still hides everything but the toolbar and the story.
Does full screen stay on for my next story?
No. Full screen ends when you reload the page, and it starts off each time.
Turn on dark mode
When you’re signed in:
- Open the account menu at the top of the app.
- Under Appearance, choose Dark. Light turns it off, and Match system follows your device’s setting.
You can also set it in Settings, on the Profile tab, under Appearance. Your choice is saved to your account.
When you’re reading a tutor’s link without signing in:
- Choose the Dark mode button in the header at the top of the page.
- Choose it again to switch back. The choice is kept in this browser.
Tip
Printing and PDFs are always light, even in dark mode. You don’t need to switch back before you print.
