Share a link
Every published story can have one link for anyone: students open it in any browser, with no account. You choose how the story opens for them (its starting point), and they can still change it.
Making and changing links needs the Educator Studio plan.
Share a story
- Open the story from Stories. If it’s a draft, read it and choose Publish in the bar under the toolbar. See Edit lines and publish.
- Set how the story should open. See Choose how the link opens below.
- Under Share link, choose Create link. The first time, Stichos asks you to confirm once: “I’ll send links only to learners 18 or older, tell students when their reading is reported to me, use the reports only to teach them, and enter only names or labels for students and classes.” Tick the box and choose Continue (or Not now to make no link). The link appears in a row, with how it opens in plain words, such as “Starts with translations under each line · key words highlighted”.
- Choose the copy icon in the link’s row. A message says “Link copied”.
- Paste the link into an email, a message, or your class page.
You can also select the link’s address in the row and copy it yourself. This row is the plain link, for anyone. To make a link for one student or a class, use Add a link for…; see Links for a student or class.
Example
Elena publishes “На рынке” for her A0 beginners. She leaves the preview on Guided with key words highlighted, chooses Create link, then the copy icon, and pastes the link into her class chat.
Students with an account
A student who opens your link while signed in finds the story in their Library, under From your tutor, until you turn the link off or delete it (the What students see box and the delete questions say so). The row shows your display name, for example “From Elena” (see Profile and appearance). A student who saves it keeps their own copy, whatever you do afterwards. You don’t see this: nothing about a student’s Library reaches you, and it isn’t counted as an open on your Dashboard. This works the same for plain and tracked links.
Choose how the link opens
The preview is the starting point: your students start the way the story looks to you. A note under the title says so: “Students open the story the way it looks now, and can change the layout themselves.”
- In the reader toolbar, pick a Layout: Guided (a translation under every line), Assisted, or Solo (plain text). See Layout: Guided, Assisted, Solo.
- Turn Highlight key words on or off (the button next to the Layout). It’s switched off for a story with no key words.
Text size and other reading settings aren’t part of the link: each student sets their own.
Change how a link you already shared opens
Changing the preview doesn’t change the link by itself.
- Change the Layout or Highlight key words in the preview.
- The bar now says “Students with this link will start the way your preview looks now.” Choose Update link.
The change is for everyone who has the link, the next time they open it. The address stays the same.
See the story as a student
Choose the open icon at the end of the link’s row (Open as a student (new tab)). The link opens in a new tab, as your students see it. Pronunciation works there, and so does audio if you have Premium Audio. Students can also print the worksheet version from your link (Export, then Print), whether or not they have an account or a plan.
Copy links from the Stories card
- One story: open its ⋯ menu and choose Copy link. If the story already has a link, it’s copied straight away. For a draft, the item is Publish and copy link.
- Several stories: choose the checkbox button left of the search box (Select stories), tick the stories, then choose Copy links (…) at the bottom of the card.
When a story needs a new link, the What students see box asks how new links open: Start with translations under each line and Highlight key words (for stories with key words). Stories that already have a link keep it as it is. Drafts are published first, and the box names them. Each link is copied on its own line, after the story’s title, ready to paste into an email.
Turn a link off or delete it
- Turn it off: switch off Link on in the link’s row. Students who open it see “This link isn’t available. It may have been turned off or deleted. Ask your tutor for a new one.” In a signed-in student’s Library the story shows “Your tutor stopped sharing this.” Switch it back on to share it again, at the same address. While it’s off, the copy icon waits, with the note “Turn the link on to share it.”
- Delete it: open the ⋯ at the end of the row and choose Delete link. Stichos asks first, because students who have it can never open it again, and it leaves their Library. This can’t be undone.
If you might want the link back, turn it off instead of deleting it.
I edited the story after sharing it. What do students see?
The published version, until you publish your edit. Publishing then asks whether to move your links to the new version. See Edit lines and publish.
Do students need an account?
No. Anyone with the link can read the story. See Reading a story you were sent, the page your students see from the link’s help icon.
Does a link keep working if I archive the story or my plan ends?
Yes, in both cases. You can still turn your links off or delete them.
