Audio

Anyone can hear a single word from the word box. Premium Audio, an add-on for Learner Plus and Educator Studio, reads whole stories aloud in a natural-sounding voice. Esperanto is read by Polish voices, so it has a Polish accent.

Hear a single word (everyone)

  1. Choose a word in the story to open its box. See Looking up a word.
  2. Choose the speaker button next to the word (Play pronunciation).
  3. Press again to hear it slower: each press steps from normal to 0.75×, 0.5×, then back. A small label shows the last speed.

With Premium Audio, words play in a natural-sounding voice; Stichos records a word that has none yet, up to 100 new words a day. Without it, your device’s own voice reads the word.

Example

Tom, on Free, is learning Korean. He presses the speaker by a word to hear it in his device’s voice, then twice more for three-quarter and half speed.

Get Premium Audio

Premium Audio needs three things: a Learner Plus or Educator Studio plan, the Premium Audio add-on, and a confirmed email address.

  1. Next to the story audio player, choose the i button (About Premium Audio). Hear a sample plays a demo.

You can hear the demo before you have an account too: the readers on the home page and the language pages have a Sample button next to the story audio player, and the Premium Audio part of the Pricing page plays the demo in any language you pick. 2. Choose Try Premium Audio free to start a plan with Premium Audio. 3. Already on a paid plan? Choose Add Premium Audio, then switch plans in Manage subscription.

See Plans and limits and Plan & billing.

Listen to a whole story

  1. In the toolbar, choose the play button (Play story audio). The first time a story is voiced, it reads Generate audio with about how many minutes it uses.
  2. Stichos voices the story, then it plays and a player bar opens at the bottom of the screen.
  3. The story is saved to your Library, with the message “Audio story saved to your Library”.

Next time, a headphones mark (Has audio) sits beside the play button.

The player bar controls playback; choose a line’s dot to play from there.

Use the player

  • Play story audio and Pause story audio start and stop the story.
  • Previous line, or restart this one and Next line jump a line back or forward.
  • Pause after each line stops after every line, so you can repeat it aloud.
  • The loop button goes from Loop: off to Loop: whole story to Loop: this line.
  • The speed button steps through 1.0×, 0.75×, and 0.5×.
  • Close player closes the bar.

While audio plays, choose the small dot beside a line to play from there. If you scroll away, Back to current line brings you back.

How minutes work

Each story’s minutes are counted the first time you play it. Replays are free.

A free trial gives 10 minutes of new audio. Your use is in the account menu, under Usage.

Audio you got while paying stays yours to replay, even after your plan or the add-on ends.

Download a story as an MP3

You can download any story you can play: with Premium Audio, a story whose audio you kept after your plan ended, or a tutor’s link that has audio.

  1. In the toolbar, choose Export, then Export as audio (MP3).
  2. Under Speed, choose 1×, 0.75×, or 0.5×.
  3. Choose Download MP3. It downloads in the background, so you can keep reading.

A story not voiced yet shows Voicing the story first…: that uses your minutes once, and the story lands in your Library, as on a first play. One MP3 at a time.

Is audio on my tutor’s link free for me?

Yes. If your tutor has Premium Audio, you play the story from the link with no plan or account. It uses your tutor’s minutes.

It says I’ve used my audio minutes.

New audio waits until your minutes come back. “You’ve used today’s audio minutes” means the daily limit: more arrive with the daily refresh at 00:00 UTC. “You’ve used this month’s audio minutes” gives the date your monthly minutes start again. Stories you already have keep playing.

Can I use the keyboard with the player?

Yes, while the player bar is open: Space plays or pauses, the arrow keys change line, L loops, P pauses after each line, and minus and plus change the speed.
