Layout: Guided, Assisted, Solo
Layout sets how much help is on the page. Guided shows a translation under every line, Assisted hides the translations until you look up a word, and Solo shows the plain story.
Change the Layout
The Layout buttons are the first three icons in the toolbar, with no text. From left to right they are Guided, Assisted, and Solo. Point to one, or tab to it, to see its name.
- Choose Guided to see a translation in your own language under every line, and under the title.
- Choose Assisted to hide the line translations. Words you haven’t looked up yet have a dotted underline. When you choose a word, its box also shows the whole sentence’s translation, under In this sentence.
- Choose Solo for the plain story. Words can’t be looked up in Solo, and nothing is underlined. Switch back to Guided or Assisted to look a word up.
The button you’re on is highlighted. Nothing is locked: switch as often as you like, even halfway through a story.
Example
Sarah is reading a Croatian A1 story. She starts in Guided and reads each line with its English translation. On her second read she switches to Assisted, and only looks up the words she still doesn’t know.
Which Layout does a story start in?
Until you choose one yourself, the Layout follows the story’s level:
- A0 and A1 stories start in Guided.
- A2, B1, and B2 stories start in Assisted.
Once you choose a Layout, Stichos remembers it for your next stories in this browser.
A story your tutor sent opens the way your tutor set it up. See Reading a story you were sent.
Tip
Your Layout also shapes what you export. A PDF or EPUB has the line translations only when you’re in Guided. See Print, PDF, and EPUB.
Why is Guided gray?
When a story is in your own language, there’s no translation to show, so Guided is grayed out. Pointing to it says “No translation for a story in your own language”. Use Assisted or Solo instead.
Does Solo count as a test?
No. Solo just hides the help. Nothing is scored, and you can switch back at any time.
