Profile and appearance
Change your name, avatar, and photo, choose light or dark, and decide whether your stories can join Discover in Settings, on the Profile tab. Your interface language is in the account menu, and the language you’re learning is on the Story Studio form.
Change your display name
- Open the account menu (your avatar at the top of the app) and choose Settings.
- On the Profile tab, type your name under Display name.
- Choose Save. Stichos says “Name saved.”
Your name shows at the top of your account menu.
Choose an avatar color or upload a photo
Your avatar is the round picture at the top of the app.
- A pattern: under Avatar, choose one of the colors. It’s saved straight away.
- A photo: under Photo, choose Upload photo and pick a picture.
A photo can be a PNG, JPEG, or WebP file, up to 2 MB. It’s cropped to a square, and only you see it. While you use a photo, the colors are off: choose Remove photo to go back to a pattern.
Uploading a photo needs a confirmed email address. Until then, Settings says “Verify your email to upload a photo.”
Switch between light and dark
- Open the account menu.
- Under Appearance, choose Light, Dark, or Match system (follows your device’s setting).
The same choice is in Settings › Profile › Appearance. It’s saved to your account, so it follows you to other devices. For dark mode while reading, see Full screen and dark mode.
Change the interface language
The interface language is the language of Stichos’s buttons and menus. It’s also the language of story translations and word meanings.
- Open the account menu.
- Under Interface language, pick a language.
- Stichos asks: “Switch the interface to …? Translations and explanations will use it too.” Choose Switch.
Example
Tom’s interface is in English while he learns Korean. He switches Interface language to German, his first language. Buttons, translations under each line, and word meanings are now in German. He still learns Korean.
Change the language you’re learning
This isn’t in Settings. Pick it under Target language on the Story Studio form. See Every option on the form.
Choose a pronunciation style
Pronunciation style decides what the reader’s pronunciation button shows for languages that don’t use Latin letters:
- Romanized: Latin letters.
- IPA: phonetic symbols.
Latin-script languages always use IPA. This choice is kept in this browser, not your account. See Pronunciation.
Share with other learners
Share with other learners is on unless you turn it off (setup asks too, on the first step). While it’s on, stories you make from Random or a browse topic can join Discover, the stories other learners read. If you have Premium Audio, audio you make for those stories can be replayed by others too.
Stories from your own topics or key words always stay private.
- In Settings › Profile, find Share with other learners.
- Turn the switch off, or on.
Turning it off only affects what you make from now on. Stories already in Discover stay there.
Does this change what my tutor sees?
No. This setting is only about Discover. What a tutor sees is set by the link they sent you. See What your tutor sees.
Product news by email
Product news by email is off unless you turn it on, at setup or here. While it’s on, Stichos sends about one email a month: new languages, new features, and tips.
- In Settings › Profile, find Product news by email.
- Turn the switch on, or off.
Every news email also has an Unsubscribe link at the bottom: it turns the switch off and stops all marketing email to that address. Changed your mind? Turn the switch back on and product news starts again. If our emails to your address bounced or were marked as spam, turning it on isn’t enough: write to info@stichos.com.
Emails about your account and plan (confirming your address, receipts, a failed payment) still come either way.
My name or photo didn’t save. What now?
Stichos says why under the field. A name with unusual characters can be refused: try plain letters. A photo that’s too big, too large in pixels, or not a PNG, JPEG, or WebP is refused with a message saying so.
